Week 21-HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Happy, Happy New Year! We have enjoyed a lovely first week back and we have had a lot of fun finding out all about everyone's holiday adventures, swapping stories and sharing highlights of the festive period. It sounds like you all had a fab time.

This week, we introduced our new Unit of Study, “Arts Festival.” In this unit, we will investigate how ideas and feelings can be conveyed through the arts. Over time, we will develop an understanding of the components involved in creating and staging a collaborative performance. Throughout the process, we will consider the different ways people can express themselves and convey a particular message through the arts as we explore what it means to be creative.

The plan is for everything to come together on  Thursday 4th February in the auditorium at 9.00am (put the date in your diaries now!!) in the Grade One Arts Festival performance. 1BeM have already started brainstorming ideas about how we can share what it means to be creative with the world...so far, we want to include zombies, make belief, imagination, fire, dancing and to let everyone know that "only boring people get bored!" It promises to be quite a show.

In Reading Workshop, we are starting to think about our next unit, “Reader’s Theatre.” In this unit, we will explore the world of plays and theatre and, at the same time, spend time improving our expression and fluency. With plenty of opportunities to read, re-read and perform texts, we will focus on bringing our reading to life. It is the perfect match for our Arts Festival unit!

This week, we have also introduced a new Writing Workshop unit, “Opinion Writing.” This unit focuses on writers stating an opinion and supplying supportive reasons for that opinion. Over the coming weeks, we will explore the skills involved in opinion writing. Many of 1BeM's first letters are addressed to "mum and dad," so, you have been warned!

*Please find the time with your child to look for and send in a cardboard box (the size is not important) for our Arts Festival performance...they know what it is for!
