Week 15

Monday's visit to Khoo Tech Puat Hospital was a great way to see how doctors and nurses use their expansive knowledge and understanding to help other people get better. We visited a Geriatric Ward and clinic, as well as explored some of the unique areas of the hospital grounds that promote wellness, such as the roof garden. The trip has generated many questions back in the classroom and our thanks go to the staff who gave up their time to show us around and share their expertise...and to Nicole (Apple's mum) for helping out.

On Wednesday, we enjoyed our second visit to Happy Lodge. This time, we were lucky enough to visit the residents in their rooms. We spread out across the fourth floor in small groups and spent a lovely afternoon playing bingo with our Happy Lodge friends. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time getting to know each other a little better and we are already looking forward to visiting again next week. A big thank you to the army of 1BeM parents who came along to support the children. We hope you enjoyed yourselves too.

As you are all aware, next THURSDAY is UN Day. This day is a wonderful community event and a true celebration of internationalism across the school. Remember, the children are encouraged to come to school wearing national dress of their own choosing, or, something that represents where they are from. The children are also invited to bring a small container to school so as to enjoy all the delicious treats on offer at the Food Festival. 1BeM would also like to invite you all back to the classroom AFTER the performance at around 12.30pm (to give us the chance to get there first) for a chance to meet the stars and take a few photos...we might even have a game to play. 

A very Happy Thanksgiving to all of our families who are celebrating this week. As we are sure you heard, 1BeM and K2AvS's combined celebration on Thursday was FANTASTIC! A huge thank you to Angela (Noah's mum) for coordinating everything and sharing a very thoughtful presentation. Huge thanks to all the mums who came along to support and who spent so much time preparing all that delicious food. That was my first ever Thanksgiving dinner and I, for one, loved it!

Following perfectly on from that, you may have read about "The Giving Tree" on the grade announcements page. This year, we have decided to do things a little differently. As we lead up to the holiday period and give thanks for all we have, we would like to encourage the children to take a moment to think beyond themselves and donate one of their own pre-loved toys to the local charity, Toys from the Heart. Toys from the Heart provides toys to needy children in Singapore for their birthdays, various cultural festivals and at their annual toy buffet. 

From the 1st December until the 9th December, we will be asking children to donate one of their own pre-loved toys (in good quality and clean condition to this project). It is important that it is something the children already have and not something they go out to purchase from the shops.

Your child can bring it into the class where we will wrap it in clear cellophane with a small card of good wishes. It will then be taken down to the Giving Tree in the Infant School foyer. 

Suggested items for children aged 5-13 years old include:

Board Games: Monopoly, Scrabble, UNO 

Games Set: Scrabble, Chess, Mastermind, Uno Stacko, Bananagrams, 

Educational Toys: Educational Science Set, Telescope, Binocular, Excavating Set, 

Experimental Set 

Building: Lego Sets, Model plane, Model Building Set 

Creativity Sets: Necklace Maker, Sticker Marker, Cupcake marker, Ice cream marker, 

Sports: Soccer Ball, Basket Ball, Badminton Rackets, Skateboard 

Dolls / Robots: Barbies Doll, Transformers, Star Wars, Gundam 

Small wooden toys: Any good quality wooden toys 

Please note that they do not take soft toys. The Toys from the Heart organisation will be coming to pick up the toys in the last week of school before the holidays. Please note that this is an entirely optional opportunity, but we are hoping that children will be happy to donate one of their toys to help a needy child this holiday season.
