Week 22

The 1BeM section of the G1 Arts Festival performance is really starting to take shape. We certainly are a creative bunch and we are trying very hard to incorporate everyone's ideas and suggestions...within reason! The process is involving a great deal of discussions, trial and error, negotiation and compromise. So far, we are collaborating in a wholly respectful manner and it is proving very successful. Next week, plans are afoot to make a start on our "costumes" and choreography!

We are finding our “Reader’s Use a Storytelling Voice” unit very useful when it comes to expressing ourselves during our Arts Festival performance. This week, we have been thinking about using our voices to bring our texts to life, reflecting the intended mood or feelings and, at the same time, we are starting to think about giving different characters suitable voices and the impact this has on the listener. We have been working in small groups reading and recording a variety of scripts. Our Grade 11 buddies joined us on Tuesday to help us explore the idea of fluency and expression in our reading.

Our opinion writing is becoming more and more powerful as we expand on our reasoning in more thoughtful and persuasive ways, even, beginning to offer solutions to our audience...the O.R.E.O. mantra is proving very useful (Opinion Reason Example Opinion). We are also starting to explore the idea of writing reviews and how we can express our opinion and persuade people to try something new, visit somewhere or even behave or act in a different way. At the same time, we are beginning to focus more on the conventions of our pieces, using capital letters and appropriate punctuation.

In Mathematics, we have enjoyed exploring all manner of shapes as we kicked off our “2D Geometry” unit. We have been creating shape pictures using a variety of media, taking inspiration from the shapes all around. The iPads are proving to be a great tool to support our developing understanding of defining and non-defining attributes, creating Doodlecasts using the sentence starter, “I know it is a triangle because…” and so on. We have also begun exploring how certain shapes can be made up of others, using the Patterns application to help us as well as “Pattern Block Fill-In” exercises.
