Week 37

Wednesday's trip to the Tampines Eco Green was fabulous. It was so lovely to escape into nature for a short while and fascinating to discover such an oasis of local wildlife more or less on our doorstep. Many of the children have expressed a desire to return and take their parents with them...so, be prepared for a family excursion!

From time to time, we took a moment to stop, close our eyes and listen to the world around us. We noticed the call of birds or the buzz of insects alongside the hum of traffic or the whirrs of trains. Around the periphery, we noticed a number of different man-made creations surrounding the Eco Green, including the MRT line, the TPE, an extensive HDB block and Tampines Avenue 9. Back in the classroom, we recorded our thoughts and reflections using the "See, Think, Wonder" template and the trip has been the catalyst for a great deal of discussion around the positive and negative impact people have had on local wildlife.

In Writing Workshop, we have been focusing on planning our ideas before starting, using the "five finger" trick. Hopefully, this will allow our stories to flow from beginning, through middle to the end. At the same time, we are trying hard to incorporate a problem and a solution into our creations so that our stories read like stories as oppose to a diary of events. We also caught up with our 4PBa buddies this week and, together, created some wonderful animal acrostic poems.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring money using Mr. Morley's spare change jar! We have enjoyed using money to explore counting, identifying coins and notes of different denominations and combining coins to represent amounts up to and including a dollar.

We enjoyed a wonderful morning in 2SNi this week finding out from the Grade 2 children all about life over the bridge. They shared digital and written "A Day in the Life" books and answered lots of our questions. We will be doing lots more over the coming weeks to support our transition to the Juniors.

We also found time to Skype Ms. Kerena and our friends at Kuma Cambodia to talk about our design for the Book-Book-Tuk-Tuk logo. They loved what we had created but had a few suggestions to make it even more special.

...and finally

A special message from Milo in 1LJe:
"On Tuesday May 3rd, we will have a book and bake sale. We are raising money to help Kuma Cambodia with their Book Book Tuk Tuk. Please bring $3, $2 or $1 to buy a cookie, brownie, cupcake and books."
