Week 35

Term 3!?! How did that happen? The next 10 weeks promise to be as fun-filled and action packed as ever so buckle up and make sure you keep reading this Blog and the eBrief to keep on top of all the exciting happenings.

This week, we began to unpack our new Unit of Study, “Life Links.” We have been sharing what we already understand about habitats, survival and the impact of humans on the environment. There have been many discussions around what we already know about animals (which is a lot!), what they have in common and how they are different. 

Our final term got off to a wonderful start on Monday when we were treated to a Reader’s Theatre performance by 3KDu. The Grade 3 children acted out three of their favourite plays for us, complete with props, costumes and sound effects. It was great to hear so many fantastic character voices and the children really got into their roles on the stage. Well done, 3KDU! 

The performance was the perfect segway into our new Reading Workshop unit, “Character Study.” We have been thinking about ways to describe characters, both their outside, or external, appearance and their internal traits. We started with some characters that we know really well...ourselves! It made for compelling (and imaginative?) reading.

At the same time, we kicked off a new Writing Workshop unit on Monday, namely “Authors as Mentors.” We have decided to focus on David Shannon because we are such fans of his "David" books. Over the coming weeks, we will unpack what it is that makes his books special and the reasons behind the choices, or "craft moves," he makes in his writing. In time, we will start to compose our own narratives and, perhaps, begin to incorporate some of David's moves in our own pieces.

In Mathematics, we have revisited some of our assessments from Term 1 and 2, focusing on number. It is pleasing to observe the progress the children have made in their mathematical understanding and, at the same time, it gives us valuable insight into areas that we might need to look at again, as well as highlighting common misconceptions and gaps in understanding.

We are very excited to have Ms. Naylor, Head of Service in the Primary School, come to visit us next week. We cannot wait for her to see our final design for the Book-Book-Tuk-Tuk logo, to hear how we are getting on with our theme tune and to hear some of our plans about teaching our Cambodian friends to reuse plastic bottles in creative ways.
