We are really excited about the prospect of working with the Kuma Cambodia community on a Service project. This week, we discovered a lot more about their school and the surrounding areas. We watched a fascinating video following "A Day in the Life" of the children who attend the school. We discussed the similarities and differences and how our observations impacted our thinking about the Service project ideas we are wrestling with. We have now composed letters to Mr. Srean (the Principal) and Ms. Kerena (the Head of Admin) and Mr. Morley is "sending" them over the weekend. Hopefully, they will consider our proposals and get back to us and we will be able to move forward from there. Watch this space...we may need your help!
Please keep sharing photos of your child being "At Your Service" at home as this is stimulating so many discussions in and around the classroom.
Our research into the features of non-fiction books and strategies to extract the most significant information from them are proving invaluable when it comes to composing our own books. We are being careful not to merely reproduce what we are reading in our writing but, instead, are taking the ideas and adapting them to make them our own, using our own language to say things in our own way. This week, we found that using graphic organisers is very helpful when it comes to arranging our thinking...and, also, means we do not forget significant findings from one day to the next!
Wednesday’s theatre trip was an enormous success. It was an excellent production and was greatly enjoyed by everyone. The experience certainly reinforced many of the key ideas from our previous Reading Workshop unit around the power of expression and character voice to impact the listener. The cast also treated us to a “Q and A” session at the end of the performance, where Apple was lucky enough to have her questions answered by the stars of the show. Of course, the children behaved impeccably throughout and were a credit to the school.
In Mathematics, we are revisiting the idea of place value, as the related concepts provide a convenient way to compose and decompose numbers to facilitate addition and subtraction computations. As always, encouraging each other to explain the reasoning behind our computations and calculations really helps cement understanding and is something we do each and every day. We are trying to use different media to help us explore this area, again, to reinforce and strengthen true understanding.
