Week 12

This week, we started exploring the skeletal system. We began by thinking about why we have bones and what we would look like if we did not have bones which, we found out, is a great big puddle of goo! We had a great time sticking bone names all over each other in, what we thought, was the correct place! We have already discovered a great many fascinating facts about our bones, including the names, locations and functions of bones of all shapes, sizes and uses.


We have been using all sorts of resources to help us create a plethora of "Did You Knows?" for our display board...come and check them out! We are all very much looking forward to unpacking the skeletal system further during our Workshares with you next week.

The children are creating their own poems at an amazing rate! This week, we looked at two different types of poems, acrostic and shape poems, and many of us had a try at creating our poems in this style. We are also exploring strategies and craft moves poets use in order to bring their work to life and inject emotion into their pieces and have had great fun experimenting with onomatopoeia.

This week, we have been putting the finishing touches to our “Measurement and Data” unit. We have completed several end of unit assessment tasks which have highlighted just how far we have come in our understanding of the key concepts in this area. We are also discovering that investigating bodies is a very effective means of generating interesting data and we are enjoying unpacking this together. We have also been thinking about probability and whether it is certain, impossible, likely or unlikely that something will happen.

Thank you to everyone who brought in a piece of fruit today for “Fresh Fruit Friday.” I do not have the figures yet but the bags looked very heavy, so, I think we have done very well...I was also told 1BeM brought in the first melon in "FFF" history! As you are reading this, the fruit is being enjoyed by migrant workers across the island. Remember, this initiative continues every Friday.

The highlight of the week for many of us was today's visit to Forest Adventure. This field trip is the perfect opportunity for the children to demonstrate collaboration, communication and, above all, resilience. It was wonderful to observe the children not only taking risks and pushing themselves outside of their comfort zones but, also, supporting and encouraging one another. This was an extremely challenging experience for a number of the children and Ida and I are so proud of them.

Lastly, thank you to Mahima (Vihaan's mum), Monali (Rihaan's mum) and, the star of the show, Vihaan's grandma, who came in this afternoon to celebrate the Hindu Festival of Light, Diwali. We heard all about the origins of this spectacular festival and enjoyed creating our own cards and diyas too. Thank you also to Nicole (Apple's mum) who came in earlier in the week to teach us all about the ancient Chinese art of calligraphy. We heard all about the fascinating history and were lucky enough to have a go ourselves.
